Why, when you rub your eyes, color circles are visible?

Pressing on the eyeball causes mechanical irritation of the retina and/or optic nerve. This false signal enters the visual centers of the brain, which interpret it as a regular signal from retinal receptors. Subjectively, this is felt as outbreaks of light, often having the form of diverging circles – this is how excitation is spreading when pressing.
